You can't create a genuine DNG from a finished FITS — but DNG conversion from camera RAW is real. Here's the full picture.
DNG is a RAW container built to hold the unprocessed data straight off a camera sensor. A FITS is an already-developed image — wrapping it in a DNG can't recreate the dynamic range or color depth it never kept.
Where DNG shines is converting a camera's own RAW (CR2, NEF, ARW…) into the open DNG format for archiving. That's a true conversion; turning a finished FITS into RAW is not.
